Quite a few years ago we were on a weekend trip to a state park to do some hiking, and it poured pretty much non-stop. My wife indicated we should just call it and head home, but I dug in and said "it's nice just being away from home, we can hang out and play games, etc etc.". Well, with the kids bored, and 6 of us crammed in the trailer, it was more misery than fun. But we stayed. And I can't tell you how many times in the years since my wife has mentioned "remember that time....". LOL. So the moral of the story is, you made the right call.
