I usually diesel up at local stations very rarely at big truck stops most often their cheaper too.
Some lessons learned, look for pumps that are angled or parallel to road, pumps that are at right angles to the road are the most difficult to maneuver. Always have your own on board air pump I feel for you trying to use the station air pumps, by the time you get close enough to reach the hose you find out it doesn't work or it eats your quarters.
Most often the diesel pumps are on the outside, rarely in the middle.
Don't be afraid to stop and check out the lay of the land before pulling in to a station, people will just have to wait sometimes.
The more you travel the easier it gets.
