Where do you put your trash can?

Hi there! I just joined the forum! The hubs and I are trading in our MH for a TT we can pull with our half ton. We love the floor plan we found and the only "issue" is that we aren't sure where we would put our trash can. All of the lower cabinets have built in shelves and there is no open cavity under the sink. I know most people would just set it in an out of the way spot but we almost always camp with our dog. He just recently turned one so he is still very much a puppy and thrives on getting into mischief. I would really appreciate your advice and tips! Thank you! :)
  • One of the nicest features on our previous FW, heartland Silverado, was a garbage bin. There was a place in the countertop that you picked up and threw the garbage in. There was space enough for a tall kitchen can which you accessed from the exterior of the RV. Great feature.
  • One of the things that caught my eye on our new Winne MH was a plug in the Corian countertop that lifted out to reveal a trash can below concealed behind it's own cabinet door. Just a nice little touch that we appreciate many times a day.....

Then look for a model that includes this feature in the design ... our own Coachmen Freedom Express does, with a built in trash can located by the galley next to the entry door. Our canine pal learned long ago to not fuss with it but we empty it daily - no issue. :W When traveling and it's otherwise empty I carry a gallon jug of fresh drinking water in there so it can't tip over.

  • We put ours in the shower for the same reason. We have had as many as 5 Brittanys in the TT. When we need the shower, we just set it outside in the bathroom, which is closed then.

Been doing this for 3 TTs in a row. What is nice, is that we can use pretty much any size can we want. I like a bigger one for less emptying.
  • Welcome to the forum!

I had no place in my TT for a garbage can too.
What I did was measured the area under the sink for what would fit there and went to Wally World and picked up a Rubbermaid tote with lid. It was roughly 8 inches high, about 22 X 16" or so. It fits under the sink to the right of the drain pipe.
A regular kitchen style trash bag fits in there, although I had to stretch it a bit to get the bag over all edges of the container where the handles are.
It has a handle on both ends so it's very easy to grab and pull out or halfway out if needed. The lid was stored underneath the container so I could easily pull it out to put on top. But I seldom used the lid.
So to use it I'd just open the door and toss the trash in.
Container always stayed clean as the bag covered the whole thing.

Capacity isn't a lot but it worked great for me.
  • We have to use a trashcan sitting in the open beside our lower kitchen cabinet near the sink. We have two dogs that would love to get in the trash, but we have a Rubbermaid trashcan with a locking lid. Even thrown to the floor, it remains closed. Which is good, because our 100 pound hound dog's tail can knock it over when it's empty.

When we leave the dogs in the trailer alone and go outside for an extended time, we put the trash up on a counter.
