The breakaway cable is rendered useless when woven through the safety chains. If the chain comes off (happens frequently enough (not me)) it will not do anything if the trailer comes loose. Yes all these scenarios are long shots, but that's what safety systems are for, that one time when something bad happens. And if you take a short cut, it's the other person that pays the price! I'm sure that person in (New York I think) thought that before their boat came loose and killed a bicyclist!
