I keep mine in my front pass-through all the time when not in use. I don't have a separate box or compartment, and have found over 20 years of RV ownership, this is probably the easiest place to keep them. One side of the pass-through is for storing the hitch and WD bars, my 30 amp extension cords, and stuff like that. The other end of the pass-through is for lawn chairs, yard mat,few tools, wires, odd-and-ends stuff.
The hitch and bars stay clean, dry, and out of the way. I know where they always are, and they are always with the camper this way. For me, this works. I can only share how I do it. Others do it their own way too.
