Kinda itchin for an 8 speed Cummins.....
Honestly a 6 speed feels pretty adequate with the Cummins. It does a good enough job in 1st to get moving but still only runs about 1800 rpm cruising at 85. I'm sure an 8 speed would be marginally better but I wouldn't trade the CP3 away for 2 extra gears.
The Cummins in my motorhome sure could us another gear or two in its Allison transmission. There is so much gap between 3rd, 4th and 5th gears it is unbelievable. The engine feels like it dies after each shift. And a lower first gear would help get you rolling while waiting for the turbo to wind up. Maybe with the better power to weight ratio you don't notice it in the pickup so much. I certainly hope so.
Depending on the year, you can have a diesel tech shop, change the shift points in the computer to hold the gears longer, basically putting it in tow/haul mode.
