Even though DW is what I call "the Hitch Ball Wizard" (an amazing spotter), there are times (in the darkness, especially) that I can't see her hand signals while backing up. And I can't hear her over the engine noise unless she shouts, which is not so great in a campground late at night. So I am lobbying hard for walkie talkies. Her objection is that they are unreliable and they eat batteries.
So that is my question -- just for spotting, which ones do you recommend? We don't need to talk across town -- if the range is a hundred feet, that is enough! How is the clarity, and how is the battery life, on your favorite walkie talkies?
Thanks in advance for your advice. (PS -- I tried to use the archive to see if this particular question has been asked before and came up empty.)
You don't need much!
We got some for around $30. They have PLENTY of range for backing. Clarity is fine. They have 6 or 8 channels but I've never heard anyone else on them. Not rechargeable, but turn them off when done, and the batteries last 2 or 3 years! Not exactly eating batteries. I take the batteries out after each season and they last just fine.
I think we got them at target, or some such. Something like that is all you need.
I have hitch thingies like the last post suggested, for hooking up, so we use our radios for backing into sites, but we go to Provincial Parks where you sometimes have to back around trees and such. Not many straight runs onto a paved pad, so they come in handy!
