As an owner of a tow vehicle that is a 1 ton diesel I agree with your statement 100%. If you're within factory specs you are good to go...
However, with one caveat. As long as the the factory specs you are referring to are the GVWR and GCVWR and NOT the "factory tow ratings" which are almost always garbage.
Remember, just because the engine can pull it doesn't mean the suspension can hold it.
