The RV industry (specifically travel trailers) is the way it is because people are cheap. They are quite happy buying Walmart quality at Walmart prices but are quick to complain when they get what they pay for. There are plenty of high end manufacturing companies but people don't want to pay high end prices - they want a deal. And, on top of that, they will find the cheapest dealer with the cheapest price and complain when the dealer didn't pre-inspect what they buy.
One can buy a bayliner or one can buy a grady white. But in the end, you get what you pay for. If you want to buy cheap, expect to get the quality and service that goes with it.
"Want to buy cheap"? No. But for some people like us, it's a necessity. We are in our early 70s and on a limited budget, so we had a lot to consider when we shopped. What we just bought is our first, and probably last, TT, which we intend to use for weekend and slightly longer trips, mostly within 500 miles of home, and we had a specific price limit that we tried very hard to stick to. We ended up exceeding it slightly, but were willing and able to opt for some of the quality features we liked. We have zero mechanical skills, which is why we sold our older used RV/toad combo four years ago, after just over 18 months of use - my husband was so nervous about (nonexistent, in our brief experience) problems with it that it sucked all his enjoyment out of the experience. Again, we'd have loved a new, warrantied unit but didn't have the budget for it.
There's something for everyone. Not everyone has the budget for top-of-the-line products. For people like us, we're glad that there's a mid-range, where we can get decent quality and size at an affordable price. And I'm sure that there are plenty of people out there whose budgets are smaller than ours, who just want to get out on the road over school vacations without the bells and whistles, and are willing to buy lesser quality to do that.
Please don't write us off.
