I don't how to get this idea between your ears. You say If in ratings you will not over stress things. This is true! No disagreement from me. The OP asks why 4.1. The point you act like you do not understand is Because the lower speed gears reduce stress on the rest of vehicle they can increase the ratings!
Still need to tow in the ratings to keep the stresses at acceptable level, but the ratings are higher.
The OP never suggested he was going to run over the limits. You are the one who keeps going back to that assumption. I covered that in my original response.
IMHO, there is no reason the OP could not go to a salvage yard, grab a rearend out of a diesel, and reduce the actual tow performance of his ride. (The rating would not change) Would he be happier with his rig?
I'm not assuming anybody is running over ratings. I'm stating that in part the rating is what it is
because of the ratio BTW, when we are wanting to drive a late '40s early '50s Chevy with "stock" drivetrain we hunt for cars with auto transmission to supply the rearend. The higher speeds the Powerglide came with is better for today's roads.
But brother tows a TT with his '48, so he stayed with stock gears until changed transmission.
