On my way down to Mexico my trailer plug fell out, it was old and the plastic tab broke. I could barely tell the difference having no TT brakes but I was driving on FLAT land only, in my 1/2 ton Tahoe.

Thankfully not on a big downhill, but brake failures can happen.
And here is another one. While towing my 5500# TT home from a trip with my 1997 F150 4.6L I came to a red light and noticed my brakes just didn't feel right. I had to press a little harder to get the same braking action and I was getting more nose dip. Next stop same thing.
I pull over to see if my 7 way was connected and it was. I pulled it out and noticed the contacts were a bit corroded. Plugged it back in and brakes were back to normal. After about another 50 miles or so same thing.
While stopped at the light I placed the truck in park, jumped out, ran to the back of the truck and jiggled the connector. Brakes worked fine for another few miles and it did it again. I said 'Oh, the heck with it' and drove another 100 miles home without trailer brakes.
I could tell they were not working but I could still stop the combo with no problem. I never felt unsafe but drove accordingly, all on flat-land.
On another note: On another trip I had a blow-out on one trailer tire and never knew it until the next morning. I could have drove 20 miles or 200 miles on three tires. I'll never know.
All towing with a 1997 F150.
