I have been aware of EVERY payload rating on EVERY vehicle I've ever owned. There is over $10,000.00 price difference here between a 1/2 ton and a 3/4 ton, so I am fully aware of the payload. I would love a 3/4 ton but can not afford the difference (my trailer costs barely more then 10K) so I have had to choose a 1/2 ton with a decent payload and a light trailer.
I know it varies regionally but in the northwest there's nowhere near a $10k difference between a 1/2 and 3/4 ton with similar options. In fact by the time you option a half ton up with the HD package to max out your payload, you can get a 3/4 gas with similar options for less money - and a lot more payload.
So then the difference just boils down to operating cost (a 3/4 ton with a big V8 will burn a bit more gas than a half ton - I figure around $400 a year for the miles I typically log).
I just did "build a truck" on the GM Canada website to check in my area. To build a new version nearly identical to my 2011 Sierra 1500 has an MSRP of $49,700.00 (50K) and a 2500 built with almost identical options has an MSRP of $60,925.00 (61K)
I could build a 3/4 ton for less money then my 1/2 ton, but I would give up all the options that I want.
