There are lots of folks that tow within their pickup's limits. They are not the ones who populate the forums with their "What can I do now?" questions. Boy was I surprised the first time I scaled a F-150 and trailer about twelve years ago. It did not tow "too" bad, but was over on a couple of the ratings. It was a pretty small twenty two foot trailer.
May have been true back then-my 26 foot trailer (that's the box-with hitch 30 feet) weighs 4,500 pound DRY. There are no slides. The issue is that when half-ton owners go looking at trailers, they start looking at three slides, outside kitchen, etc.,etc. and that's what puts the weight on.
There are plenty of very nice ULTRA LIGHT trailers out there. You just need to buy 70% or so of your tow rating for a towing experience a half-ton can handle
