You imply that the tc manufacturers make money off the tie down systems. They don't.
Price wise its all relative. Risking a 30k + camper for 200 (difference between tie downs and straps) doesn't make sense to me. Of course if you camper is worth 300 it makes more sense to save 200. As others have noted, using the product designed for the function is easier as well. Keep in mind that nylon/poly exposed to the elements can break unexpectedly.
