There are four truckcampers in my camping circle, and not one of them keeps the camper on the truck full time.
At least in my part of the world, a pickup has a lot more to do than carry a camper- that's why folks buy them instead of Class C's.
I find I camp often enough that it is more convenient to keep the camper on the truck and only pull it off when I need the bed to haul (I do have a flat bed trailer always available which makes a difference).
The reason I bought the TC instead of a Class C was the towing capacity and 4WD capability of my truck. I frequently tow 5000-7000 lbs behind the TC and have no reservations camping in snow or dispersed public lands.
BTW: I'm not in your camping circle, but I'm not that far away either. I try not to generalize about people because I know all of us have quirks we think are normal.
