Why Diesel Engines Lose Power & Efficiency Over Time

Interesting video from Jason Fenske at Engineering Explained on Exxon's new Synergy diesel fuel additive package, and their 2% mpg improvement claim. What I found more interesting was the 11% NOx improvement which means less DEF usage and/or more max power could be had without the need to de-fuel in order to stay within emissions.

BTW, even though he doesn't name of the third party test facility, it was Southwest Research here in San Antonio, Texas. I recognize the facility from when I worked at Cummins(we used them a lot) and confirmed it with a few friends that work there.

  • My uncle was a diesel mechanic in Alaska for decades. He helped pioneer the oil analysis technology for Standard Oil.

    He always told me to get the air in and get the air out. Then get rid of the dirt. I have actually had good luck with engine additives designed to reduce friction.

    How about normal wear and tear and lack of maintenance?
  • I've been running this ExxonMobil DieselEfficient fuel for ~7 months now and it clearly reduced the regen frequency on my truck.

  • ALL piston engines lose power and efficiency over time......if the time is long enough.

    It is because of wear; piston rings and loss of compression mostly.

    You can't really fix that with snake oil.
