Why Do Water Heater Anoides Deteriorate So FAST?

I've never had an issue with a water heater in any of my trailers. The only areas we RV are in AZ and southern CA, both with very hard water. My last trailer was 10 years old when I sold it. Heater still worked great. If its not hard water causing the problem then what is?
