If you belong to one of the Duramax forums, this is one of the first things you will learn. I installed a prefilter along the frame rail with a 2 micron filter. This filter is about 3.5 inches across and about 9 inches long. I change this yearly (only about 5-6K miles a year). I buy this filter for about $9 with tax included. The Racor in the engine compartment has come down but still runs around $25. I let the Racor filter on 2 years and when I removed it the last time, I cut it open and it was still like new on the inside. Besides protecting the injectors, the prefilter has the added benefit of costing only a third of the Racor.
