Why is it so hard to find a good used Suburban 2500

I have been looking for a good used Suburban or 3/4 ton Chevy /Gmc vehicle and they are really
scarce. I have been looking on auto trader,cars.com and craigslist . I like to spend around $20.000 since this vehicle will be used only to tow the trailer. Any suggestions would be appreciated . Thanks ED

Add the oil price spikes of the early to mid 00s to the recession of 08, and the fact GM did not sell that many in ideal economic conditions regardless, and that tells you why they stopped production 5 years ago.

Why not a crew cab 2500 truck and put a nice fiberglass topper on the bed, basically the same thing but with additional room especially if you get the 8' bed?

Either way good luck with a $20K budget.
  • I have a nice 99 2500 Suburban 4x4 with the 7.4L that I’ll let go cheap.
Unfortunately, I toasted the transmission today coming up the Grapevine. I limped home going 30 mph up the hills.
I really like the vehicle and will probably spend a few thousand to have a new trans installed since it’s in great shape and no rust. I bought it from a buddy to have a tow rig while I’m building a house. I’ll probably go back to a new diesel truck soon.
PS: Looks just like Benk’s minus the wheels. Everything’s stock on mine.
  • Because most folks only want a half ton....falsely thinking a higher ratings class Suburban would have less ride quality...so they order half ton Suburbans...

So there are few 8.6K GVWR Subs out there and those who understand...keep them a long time and when they do go on the market...snapped up in a flash (decent shaped ones)

Keeping my 1996 K3500, big block Suburban till I die...or can't drive anymore...

  • Bought ours new almost 7 years ago. We have 107k miles on it and plan to keep it until kids are out of the house. Sorry!

Are you open to 1-ton vans? Same powertrain, cheaper and more plentiful, but 2WD only.
  • I sold our 3/4 ton Suburban to a party on the east coast, they prefer vehicles that spend all there years out west because there is no 'RUST' to speak of and they don't even question having it shipped. Check online under 'newsgroups' or 'forums' and be ready to jump on it if it is the one you are looking for. Good luck.

An out of state vehicle would have to meet CA emission regs which could get expensive. They are scarce here too, a clean well maintained Sub doesn't stay on the lot for long and fetches premium dollars.

They haven't had single state emissions in years.

OP they were expensive in the day so they are rare. Rare is rare and rare is expensive. This hurts your cause. As stated, look in other states.
