Anonymous is the key word here. People get real brave when they are sitting behind the keyboard. I was a member of one forum, which I have since lost interest it, that actually required that you sign your posts with your real name. You were given a couple of warnings then you were locked out and your account cancelled. That was a VERY civil forum. There were disagreements, but they were resolved respectfully, or the thread was simply closed or deleted. Arguments were never allowed to go on for as long as they do here. By the time the mods close a hostile thread, it's already 3-4 pages in length. Even someone with the thickest skin doesn't want to be a part of that for very long.
There are a lot of argumentative people on here, and the problem is that a lot of them are arguing in support of bad information simply for the sake of the argument. In many cases it's harmless, but in many instances, such as when working with electricity, I've read things posted here that were just outright downright dangerous and should have been deleted.
