I do have trouble with the high speed issue. First there is the added cost of towing at higher speeds. Go ahead and do it and see how you MPG will tank, no pun intended.
Then there is the issue of towing safely. On a nice freeway with little traffic and no wind, some additional speed could work. I have had TV/Trailer combos pass me like I was standing still. It wouldn't take much for things to go south if something were to happen in these cases. I say, slow down, enjoy the scenery, take your time and save some money.
There is nothing wrong with towing at any legal speed....IF the driver and equipment are up to the task...With a Tundra....65 might well be too fast.
I say this having towed with some undersized TVs in the past myself...There IS a difference.
As far as the MPGs go, sometimes the time saved is worth the cost.
Many times I gotta leave Phoenix when the temps are 110 or so. It will cool off as soon as we gain some elevation....With live animals on board, poking along in the slow lane just isn't in the cards.
Other times we have to travel 500 miles one way to a dog trial. The trial lasts two days. SAT and SUN, then we gotta make tracks home to be at work.. Yes we burn thru some fuel.. But it's our money, and it ain't gonna be cheap anyways.
A good truck, good tires, and a good TT can do this easily.
But most here are towing with TVs that double as commuter vehicles, ST tires made who knows where, and a TT with barely adequate running gear. This is a compromise, and they will be limited by it.
