will dealer let you test tow TT?

Salesman seems to be giving me a bit of push back for wanting to tow the TT we are looking at, it is well within the specs of my truck as far as tongue and overall weight. obviously i want to tow it with a wdh on it as well. is this not a common thing?

  • Before we bought a 5th wheel back in 05 I was not sure if I liked the idea of towing a 5th wheel. They hooked me up with truck and 35' just so I could test drive it..
  • I requested a test tow and so did my father (two different dealers). Neither hesitated and set us up with a WDH to tow with. In my dads case I knew he wouldn't like it and that it was too heavy for his truck (despite the dealer saying it would be fine). We drove it to a CAT scale and weighed it. He didn't buy the trailer. In my case, I bought the trailer and eventually upgraded my TV anyway. Today we are both happy campers. Pun intended.
  • My dealer was happy to let us test tow. They put the snap up brackets on the TT tongue and we took a nice drive. Yes, the TT was completely empty but it still provided me enough comfort to buy the thing. Yes, my truck is marginal for the TT and I dream of the next truck...
  • thanks for link to other thread, didnt realize it was an abnormal request. max gvwr and tongue on TT is well under my payload and cargo already factored in so maybe im just being a little too ornery

  • That is not a common practice. The trailer will be empty anyway so not a good way to assess how it tows.
  • NO- it is NOT a common thing.

Besides the issues brought up by other posts here, who will install the WDH?

Who is going to pay for the installation and repair of any damage resulting from same?
  • If it is within your specs, what are your expectations regarding a test tow? Do you have pass of fail criteria?

Speaking on their behalf, who insures it while you are testing?
