You need to weigh your complete truck with you and everything inside of it that you anticipate taking with you. If you have a regular cab, 2wd truck with a 7700 lb GVWR, you will have a lot more payload capacity than if you have a 4 door 4wd truck.
Weight limits are GCWR and GVWR, primarily. You will need to know your loaded gross vehicle weight so you can subtract it from these two numbers to get your ratings. Do NOT rely on the manufacturer's supposed "tow rating," as it assumes that you weigh something like 150 pounds, won't have any more passengers, and won't carry anything in your truck.
