Soon some may go to 300 kWh but you are still short compared to the existing gas/diesel trucks. Going to be a lot of compromises to go EV for towing until the batteries are improved.
The truth and reality of tow with an electric vehicle
If towing a tiny, tiny trailer is your bag this might be your bag if time means nothing to you and you can spend hours and hours filling up your "tank."
A Tesla with a 100 KWH battery is close to $150,000. By far the largest single expense to building an battery electric anything is the battery.
Now you need to put a battery that is 3 times larger to get only half the range and then some. That battery cost will drive the price to the moon and then some.
There is more problems. You put a big battery in a truck now you're going to triple the charging cost and length of time to charge.
And let me nip this in the bud right now before anybody comes back with some BS like well, well, well, batteries are getting better all the time. No, not really.
LI batteries pretty much suck for big power density. That's why I have to plug my phone in every night. And as far as the ultra fast quick charge, nope. There is a reason it takes the time is does to fill a battery up. The more you lean on a battery the more you will shorten it's life. That's why Tesla does not recommend to super charge all of the time. It's like running nitro in a ICE.
Look what happened in the TFLC video.
If you want to be an outlier and you want to have a very small tent trailer and tow it 125 miles before you have to charge for almost an hour to get to tow another 125 miles before you have to charge again; knock yourself out.
Most trailers in the USA are about the size of mine. Mine is 30' long and weighs about 11 to 12K loaded to go. From what I have read I'm about average and drive around 300 miles a day towing my 11K LB trailer. I can tow 300 miles with one tank of fuel before I have to take on more fuel.
Bottom line is if you tow with an electric vehicle it will cost you a ton of money and time. Most people have neither. Or I should say they don't want to give up either let alone both!
