Winch for TC

This may be thinking out of the box but here goes......has anyone ever put an AC winch on there TC and used there generator for power. The cost savings would be great but ???????????

Dave
  • My thoughts were to put a large AC winch (12,000 lbs)on the front of my Ram 3500 with my AF1150 and it's 2500 kw Onan generator and just plug it in when needed.... hopefully not to often.... should not be that much of a hassel for the few times one uses a winch in the back coubtry.
  • That is good point that the post is not clear.
I assumed OP is talking about putting winch on front bumper as I am just researching front mount for spare wheel and potentially winch.
But the post is not clear about it.
  • Also just curious, I wouldn't even think about mounting my 1200# ATV winch to camper, also assume mounting on truck- but unless your going over 12000#, DC winch is pretty cheap.

On board gen is pretty expensive, less than 30 amp rating it would be at full bore keeping up (with a larger winch).
But I don't really know much about A/C winches as far as costs
more curious about the 'great savings' and the thoughts along AC gen verses DC?

Your post is a little unclear . Are you thinking of attaching a heavy duty winch to the TC , or the front of a truck carrying a TC ?
  • Putting a winch on a truck camper is a recipe for disaster. There is no point on a truck camper solid enough to support usage of a winch. The winch will pull itself right off whatever it was mounted to on the camper.
  • Not a winch, but years ago I moved dump bed hydraulics from old truck to new one.
Old one had PTO for hydraulic pump, so on new one I used 120V drill with inverter to power the lift.
Over the time it proved too annoying and I found 12V pump assembly on ebay for $120.
You can buy 5000lb 12V winch for $170, so I don't see much savings here.
