For many years we lived aboard a sailing yacht and used a wind generator from Wind Bugger. It was a hefty device, the blades were almost the size of a piper cub. It was not quiet in 15 knots of wind and above which was minimal for charging. Ours was rigged to be hoisted in the rigging when at anchor. It had a centrifugal clutch to stop it in high winds. In the Islands of the Caribbean it was very effective, managing to supply power for our 12 volt fridge and other needs. The trade winds blow almost constantly.

But as we moved into northern areas the winds became less steady it was much less help. We were camped at Assateague Island a few years ago someone had one of those three bladed generators as pictured here to operate a medical device for sleep apinea (sic). They said it was only partially helpful.

I have hesitated in getting another wind generator as I believe that solar is a much better use of our resources in the conditions we find ourselves with the TC. I may add another panel to the 150 watt array we now utilize. I've found that we need a fuel powered generator to operate for longer times off the grid with our power usages.

Windy generator clicky

That turbine says it will produce up to 40 kWh per month. That's only 1.33 per day. You could make that same amount of power with a 30 watt solar panel.
To me it doesn't seem worth the money for the turbine, let alone the mounting and wiring.
However, for someone that really wants a turbine that one would probably serve the purpose fairly well.

The real cool ones are running in the $1000's. I think this is some guy having some light manufacturing company make them. Home designed. What's the cost of solar? These look they run around $4-500 all told.

I am just exploring. We camp in the deserts a lot and most places I go there is usually some wind. Just thinking.....

Nice, but very expensive to only have a 90 day warranty and not work in winds over 35. I wonder why it doesn't have a clutch to free wheel in winds over 35.
