Wind Generator?

Does anybody use a wind generator?

Vs... solar?

Has anyone already worked out the pro's - con's?

Thanks,

  • Not a great idea for an RV, but there are huge wind farms north of Indianapolis, In., and in the midwest states. For a full-time site in these areas, a smaller wind generator would probably work well. I have seen a lot of small offices that have a single tower to suppliment their power use. A few with sun and wind both.
  • Wind isn't a good match for an RV. A typical wind turbine needs to be mounted at least 30' above anything within 500' of it. This is difficult to do on a portable basis at most campsites. Most wind turbines don't produce their rated power with less than 28 MPH wind. This is rare most places and unpleasant to camp in when it occurs.
The power available in wind is related to the cube of the wind speed. So, if you double the wind speed you get 8 times the power. This means that low speed wind really doesn't have enough power potential to bother with.
Combine all this with the noise and vibration a turbine would transmit to it's attached camper and it doesn't work out too well.
Solar is a much better solution for an RV.
  • The one I saw last year at the Expo was noisy. I would make sure you knew how loud it was before buying. Maybe they all aren't as noisy as the one I heard.

Using the BLADE type turbines sort of is counter productive for RV TRAILERS. The VAWT TURBINE type however to me would be a great system to mount on top of your RV trailer. It would look like the ATTIC VENT thingies...

This would turn a shaft down to a generator inside your trailer...

Look something like this on TOP...

the big problem with stationary wind generators they have to have a SUSTAINED 5MPH wind force to work. This is hard to find everywhere. Only mountain ranges or shore line areas really have these sustained winds. Note all of the blade type wind generators farms are usually in the TEXAS and north areas of the US where there is alot of wind following the East side of the divide...

  • I am looking in to this, since living in Kodiak, AK we get lots of wind. One that had been mentioned here runs about 375...
