wind

Hi all, we are supposed to be driving 3 hrs to boone nc today. There is a wind advisory in effect with 25 to 35 mph gusts. From the wind pattern It looks like it will be a tailwind. I think the wind advisory is more for the trees coming down because the ground is soaked. Would you guys make the drive? 2011 e350 with 6500 lb 26ft campwr?
  • A tailwind can exacerbate sway, especially when going downhill and coasting. If you stay under 50 MPH, you're probably fine, just avoid the temptation to speed up. When you hear people complaining about sway problems with their rigs, it's never below 50 MPH, always above.

    CT51
  • We get an extra mpg with a tailwind. If you make a stop along the way hang on to the door to the rig or it might rip right out of your hand.
  • Bill, thanks. We are leaving in 2h and are 3 hrs away. I pushed this off yesterday because of the rain. Once I make it to 421 I can run 55. Do you think if I take it slow and pull over when needed I will be fine? Coming from raleigh
  • Because of the mountains, the roads wind around up here, the winds will hit the rig from head, tail, and either side at different times.

I am 25 miles from Boone, the wind is variable and gusting here at 8:45 am.

I recommend you wait till later today....or tomorrow.

    Bill

I would check the national weather prediction for the next 5 days. Is the area you are headed towards at the beginning or end of the current storms in your area. I would make my decision based on the above answer. 35 mph gusts of wind can make for a real white knuckle experience. If the alternative to wait a day is available, I would choose it. If not, then I would try to have all my tanks at capacity i.e. fresh water, black & gray for extra weight.
  • Yes, I would. If you find the wind bothering you too much just slow down a bit. If it is behind you, thank your lucky stars and enjoy the push! :) That kind of wind is rare!
