Sorry, didn't mean to leave you hanging. I use those 3M sanding pads, seem to do the job and cleans up easier. Sandpaper works well too.
Are you spraying the paint on out of a can? If so, here's a tip that will make your spray can paint more uniform: Shake the can vigorously for a minute or so and then put it in a container of hot water ( I use a plastic coffee can). After a minute or two, take the can out and shake it some more. Put it back in the hot water. After 5-10 minutes of hot bath, shake, and paint. Make sure you wipe the water bits off the can.
