Yep, the payload ratings on the side of your door are NOT for the consumers to meet legal requirements, they are for the manufacturer to meet legal requirements. Ever since the TREAD act of 2000 was enacted due to the Ford Explorer/Firestone fiasco, vehicle manufacturers were required to put these placards on every vehicle they make and tire manufacturers were required to put them on their tires. How people started thinking this placard was a legal limit for the consumer is beyond me.
