I believe this has more to do with the placement of the coils rather then the strength of the coils. The coils are located closer to the center of the axle than leaf springs so things in the bed essentially have a lower center of gravity. This causes top heavy things in the bed(like a camper) to sway from side to side ore easily while it can easily handle the same weight with things that aren't top heavy.
Think of it as if you were hold 100 lbs standing straight up with your feet close together versus your feet being shoulder length apart. I would be able to push you over to one side easier with your feet together rather than your feet apart.
As set of air bags or Timbrens to replace the outer bump stops would probably fix this way since they are location further apart than the coils.
