We towed the Hybrid TT in my signature with a 1st Generation Xterra. It was a 3 bed hyrid and pretty heavy. I never had it weighed, but the sticker claimed it was 4,300 lbs. The 1st Gen X has a much smaller engine, a 3.3l V6 that produces 170 hp and 210 ft/lbs of torque. I did add a transmission cooler and we had the 6,000 lb Equal-i-zer hitch system with a Prodigy brake controller. I did not have a tow package from the factory, but I added the frame reinforcements that came with the tow package as well as the Class III hitch. The X came with the pigtail for the 4 flat and I converted it to the 7 pole that was on the HTT.
The Xterra towed great. Never had any sway issues with the Equal-i-zer or problems braking. The problem it did have was going up hills. We live in southeast GA which is pretty flat. We've towed from home to Houston, TX and to NJ and Central PA. The Xterra handled it very well, but going up some of the large bridges on I-10 and the small "mountains" of Central PA were a struggle. Get in the right lane behind the tractor trailers.
The one drawback was towing when it was hot out, the A/C was not an option. Running the A/C when it was hot out would cause the engine to run hot. I never pushed it, so it may not have overheated, but it got hot enough for my comfort.
The 2nd gen X that you have has a larger engine, the 4.0l V6 with almost 100 more HP, I don't remember the torque specs. If you live in a hilly part of CA, I would be apprehensive about towing anything heavier than 3,500 lbs.
