Interesting.
The engine offerings seem especially odd, as the 300 ci inline six worked out to be a 4.9 liter in the US, and the 351 ci V8 was a 5.8 liter. Imperial to metric conversions were notoriously falsified in the states for some years, as the well known '5-point-oh' 302 V8 was actually a 4.9 liter.
So did Ford offer unique engine offerings in Aus, or were they calculated differently?
Yes there was a unique Cleveland 351 cu in engine offered here that became the Ford NASCAR Block the U.S. The Australian built engine was put in the Detomaso Pantera
Australian Cleveland NASCAR Block
I would say the others 4.1 six and the 302, were the same, as they used the similar US style advertising, which DID NOT work in Australia. Took them a while to change it.
Ford ended their importation to the US in 1975, having sold around 5,500 cars. De Tomaso continued to build the car in ever-escalating forms of performance and luxury for almost two decades for sale in the rest of the world. A small number of Panteras was imported to the US by gray market importers in the 1980s, notably Panteramerica and AmeriSport. After 1974, Ford US discontinued the Cleveland 351 engine, but production continued in Australia until 1982. De Tomaso started sourcing their V8s from Australia once the American supplies dried up. These engines were tuned in Switzerland and were available with a range of outputs up to 360 PS
