Yes - it's one of the "things to do". We do pack lightly (me and wife + dog) and with the kitchen over and behind the axles in our unit we should be on point for the weights. Knowing we're under 15k (max GCWR is 17k on my F150) total is also a good thing, IMHO.
Every unit is different as far as weights and such. Ours works for us and goes down the road safely. I also don't buy into the notion there is something unsafe about it. I've seen accidents with big and small trucks towing stuff so when it gets ugly it gets ugly.
