Back to the OP intent of this thread. I too am pulling a 34' trailer with a half ton. I do have scale weights though. Jay flight 29QBS, 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3L.
Here goes. These weights include everything for a long weekend as well as 750lb water.
Ratings
Truck GAWR F 3950 GAWR R 4300 GVWR 7600
Trailer GAWR 4400 per GVWR 9500
No WD
Truck GAW F 2992 GAW R 4180 GVW 7172
Trailer GAW 7810 HW 1298
With Blue ox WD 1000lb bars
Truck GAW F 3454 GAW R 3432 GVW 6886
Trailer GAW 8074 HW 1100
The closest to max on the truck with my WD hitch is on my GVW at 92% and with water I am at 97% of the trailer GVW. 1100 is at 12% HW.
So to those that say I need more buffer than 8%, how much? Every other truck rating is under 90%.
Lastly let's bring up the control situation in the worst case scenario. I bring you a red f250-350 super duty passing a semi and experiencing some sway, luckily he had enough truck or he would have lost control and ended up in the median facing his trailer. Good grief! Preach your HD gospel if you must but consider the folks who you are preaching to, the one liner of you'll figure it out when you buy a bigger truck, or you'll see when you try and pull the mountains is best kept for the boys asking your opinion not to try and rain on a parade. Rather try and educate the fellow through your personal experience as some here have than just tell him he's overloaded and going to wreck. I agree at 1100 dry he is likely overloaded but there is no justification that a half ton can't pull a 30-35 ft safely. Some of us do.
Lastly the power issue, I tow at 105k, I believe around 63-65 mph, that is as fast as my tires are rated for. I tow the flats at 2000 rpm and hills between 3500-4000 at 85-90k. What's you hurry? It's a holiday! My truck has lots of power for towing river valleys and foothills( haven't tried mountains).
To those of you wondering if your half ton can tow the trailer you want, do some homework, know your capacities before you buy, only work in Gross Vehicle and Axel weights, dry means nothing, and shoot for 12% of the trailer GVWR to find the estimated hitch weight not the number online.
