I am towing a 2006 Rage'n FS-2500 toy hauler loaded down with a 4 seat full cage side by side and all the gear for 5-7 day dry camping trips and have no issues at all with my 2014 F-150 4x4 SuperCrew Ecoboost, even without the MaxTow package. I also have an Equalizer brand WD hitch which I love compard to the old round bar hitches and chains.
I need to find a CAT scale but I'm sure I am around 9500 lbs wet. Just this past weekend we were up over 7000 feet elevation in the mountains of AZ and enjoying every minute of the trip. I've only had the truck since the middle of March but it has now made 3 trips up and down the mountains and it is worlds different than the 2006 F-150 5.4 it replaced.
If I was a full time RV'er I might consider a 3/4 ton gasser or even a diesel but when I tow 6-8 times a year its not even something I would consider.
I will say the first thing I did when I drove the truck off the lot was to replace the Goodyear street tires with 10 ply load range E tires and it is much more stable, I did the same with the old 2006 too but waited until the first set wore out which I would not do again. I know the weight police will have a ball with this one but I'm not gonna bite. Todays half tons are what a 3/4 ton was just a few years ago and what a 1 ton was 10-12 years ago. They have come a long long way. I even remember towing an old 18 foot Prowler travel trailer all over Durango and Cortez Colorado with a 67 Chevy Caprice car with 5 people in it, it was a little hairy but did the job at the time. We use what we have.
