i agree with the OP's general thought but not quite as conservative. I pull a 6500b empty (7500b loaded) trailer with my 2015 Yukon and intend to get a new trailer very soon that weighs 7500 empty. With that said. 7500 and 10k is a big difference. I had a 3/4 ton at one point and would definitely go back to that if it got that heavy. 3/4 definitely tows much nicer but my Yukon is rated to tow 8300lb and I don't think it has a problem doing that and a bit more. Just have to be careful and use common sense. 8300 lb is a total rating not an empty rating.
