So, what kind of acceleration performance should one look for to determine if the tow vehicle has enough power (and the right gearing) to adequately tow its trailer?

IMO acceleration isn't the biggest point on a proper tow vehicle. Sure hp is important but I would do more looking at peak torque numbers at a given rpm/road speed. I'm looking for a engine that once my speed say 60-65 mph is reached the engine can better maintain that speed without much tranny down shifting and gobs of rpm on every small incline in the road.
