Whatever material you use it would be nice if you could curve it down over the sides as it avoids a seam at the immediate roof edge that could leak.

I thought about this. I wanted something I could stand on so in the end bought aluminum daimond plate sheets, had them folded at the edges so they overlapped the side of the camper by about an inch and welded them together.

I didn't have any curves to contend with though.
