Truck Tailgate removal and storage

Curious, has anyone seen a lift or similar item used to remove a tailgate and store it?

I have a bad back and can no longer lift my tailgate to remove it or replace it.  Curious if there is any sort of device that would aid in doing that?

Thanks!

  • I have a small 12V winch rigged up in the shop I  can use to unload stuff out of the truck.  I use it for the 5th wheel hitch right now, but with a couple straps I can see why it wouldn't work for a tail gate.  that was an expanded idea for it when I got older.  With my ford I would never leave the tailgate on with a camper as one has suggested, they are just to darn heavy and not flat.  I can get mine off right now but I can see in 5 or 10 years having to feed a couple straps through it, then unhooking one side, taking  the weight off with the hoist then pulling it out of the other side.  then its all hoist.

There are long brackets off of the Fox bumper that will interfere with the tailgate on most trucks.

Maybe the toad interferes?  I'll take a closer look.

For some reason I thought the AF990 needed it removed.  If I didn't have to remove it and I've been doing it all this time I need to kick myself! lol

  • But you have an AF camper iirc.
every AF I’ve seen is flat on the bottom, the rear overhang is at the same level.
Just leave the tailgate on. I ran for years with the tailgate on. It doesn’t damage the tailgate nor the camper. Drove it to AK and didn’t even have rock chips in the paint.
Only reason I removed it at all was the 2nd AF camper we bought, I built a shelf/rack for the generator which interfered with the tailgate.

  • Never seen one. But I’m sure you could rig something from the rafters. Tie box knot around the tailgate and pick it up from that.
Or offer a neighbor a couple cod beers for 30sec worth of work.

Give me a "cod beer" and I'm liable to take a hammer to the tailgate.

But seriously, it wouldn't be hard to add 2-3 eyebolts and use a simple pully on the garage ceiling to lift it.
