A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Went camping this weekend at a campground on the lake, had not been there for a few years. Once there I began to walk around looking at the different sites when I noticed a very old dog. He just lay there until I got too close then he got up on three legs and hobbled away. Just judging I would say he is at least 11 years old. Well back to my story. The next afternoon he wanders into camp and just sits there looking. He looked so sad, so the wife got a bowl of our dog's food and put it down for him and he came over and ate. He then walked over to our dog and the two of them sniffed each other over and then they lay down together for the rest of the afternoon. That night he disappeared.
The next morning he was back and was a little more receptive of me. I looked at his injured leg and found that half of his rear foot was gone. It had healed and was not causing any problem except that he was walking on the stub that was left with no foot pad which causes him to limp. His front teeth were gone except for one canine tooth and it looked decayed. His eyes were tired looking and showing his age. He spent the rest of the day just laying around looking for a handout and by afternoon the campground host came around and saw him. I enquired about the dog and was told he had been there for three years and that most of the campers were tolerant of him and gave him food.
So what to do? Do you pick him up and bring him home or do you let nature take it course. He can't harm anyone, he has no teeth and he isn't a nuisance unless you don't like dogs, and no one seems to mind him being there. He is gentle and likes other animals as seen by his interaction with our dog. He still would not let me touch him but he would eat from my hand. Enough said, what would you do???

On June 28th 2008 Old Fella passed away of complications caused by bone cancer. Fella spent almost three years with his new family and became the icon of rescued old stray dogs. He will be greatly missed but his foot prints have been left in our hearts forever.

Now Charlie, the ten year old rescued Golden Lab has come to be a part of the continuing Old Fella story. (*Note, Charlie took his journey to Rainbow Bridge unexpectedly September 30, 2008)Suzie continues to charm her way into our hearts with her antics as she has grown from a puppy into a young lady. Togther they will carry on the Old Fella legacy. Come join us in their daily lives and be a part of the best feel good thread in RV.NET history. The legacy lives on.

Good morning everyone. It was 42 degrees with we got up this morning but the high temperature today is supposed to be in the 70's. The leaves are finally turning color so fall is late arriving this year.

Yesterday I drained all the water lines in the camper, dumped the fresh water tank and emptied the hot water heater. I have two electric heaters in the camper in case we get some real cold weather. We don't have any plans to go anywhere until after Christmas.

The fur gang is well this morning. Dixie picks up the cats toys and plays with them, Sue tries to get them from her so it has become a game. Dixie's attitude is "ALL toys are hers."

Last night was relaxing with a fire in the fireplace and all animals behaving themselves. Suzie lay in front of the fireplace for a while last night. That was Izzie's favorite place in the winter. He would sleep all night in front of the fireplace. I miss him so much.

Lizzie looks like a very young Izzie, just not as big. The clothes washing machine is making a noise that doesn't sound good. Sue is washing clothes while Lizzie looks on wondering what is going on.

Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

Good morning everyone. It's cold outside but today will warm up nicely. The fur gang is well. Lizzie is going about her business of being naughty, while Dixie is waiting on me to go to the bathroom and take a shower. Suzie is on the couch taking it easy.

Sue has gone to the school to teach a bible class. Yesterday I took Dixie to the vet. She was given a shot of 50mg Carproject Carprofen and sent home with some Novox to take starting late this eveing. If this doesn't help then she goes back for x-rays and further diagnosis.

Dr. Moore thinks she has pulled a muscle or something like that, since she is a young dog he doesn't think there is anything major going on so we will start with the most likely thing that could be going on.

I hope all is well with everyone. I continue my prayers for those who have requested it. Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

Good morning everyone. Dale I hope Brandon is able to get the fur baby. I am afraid of cancer in dogs. I got blindsided with Charlie a few years ago and Old Fella and Levi both had cancer. Dixie is such a young dog and seems to be healthy except for the limp. It seems to be her shoulder that bothers her. She needs to loose some weight, I don't know if she is carrying too much weight for her build as her legs are small. I guess we won't know until we finally go to the vet.

Lizzie is really very active, into everything she sees interesting. Suzie is just laid back and Lizzie leaves Suzie alone, her target is Dixie's tail. Whenever Dixie gets into my lap Lizzie will also get into my lap and starts picking at Dixie in one way or another.

Our weather is turning to early fall type weather. Our day time temps will be in the upper 60's and lower 70's. No frost in the forecast as the night time temps will be in the 40's.

Sue is about to go for the morning walk with the girls so I had better get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

As I mentioned some time ago, son Brandon and his family recently lost his lab/pit mix to a very aggressive cancer. Jax was 12 and well loved. Brandon's been scouring the rescues and shelters looking for the right dog for them. He found one in Atlanta, about 11 hours from them. She is a golden doodle about 3 years old. He is flying up Friday, renting a car and driving home with her if he likes what he sees. He's seen several videos, so hoping it works out. They passed the home inspection the other day. A local rescue helps with that when it's too far to travel for the other rescue. She was excited for Brandon's family because she thought they would be perfect for a dog. She especially mentioned the neighborhood because as she drove back into the subdivision she noticed many dogs being walked on the sidewalks!

Oh happy day!. Keeping my fingers crossed. We won't be able to meet her this trip, but we will see her next spring.

Good morning everyone. I mowed the lawn yesterday like Dan and Dan I hope it was for the last time this year. We haven't had any frost so far and none is in the forecast for the rest of this month. All next week we will see temps in the 60's and lows in the 40's. So far there is no color in the trees so I guess we will skip fall this year.

Dixie is still limping on her left front leg. I keep putting off taking her to the vet but I guess I will have to face the fact she needs to go and find out what is going on with her. Lizzie is making things interesting. She keeps aggravating Dixie by slapping Dixie's tail or she will jump up into my lap while Dixie is lying there and slap Dixie on the nose. Time Lizzie dose that she jumps and runs before I can react. Lizzie doesn't bother Suzie at all, as a matter of fact Lizzie gives Suzie a lot of room and does not invade Suzie's space.

Good morning everyone. Yesterday it rained all day and the temperature never got out of the 40's. Today we are supposed to be back in the mid 60's and will be the same for all next week. Today I will cut the grass, hopefully for the past time this year.

All is well this morning. Dixie and Suzie ate breakfast and have been for a walk with Sue. Lizzie is running wild looking for something to get into. The time changes next week and the girls will have to reset their internal clock. At seven in the morning Suzie and Dixie start wanting to go outside. So when the time changes back one hour they will still want to get up and out at their same scheduled time. So there will have to be a learning curve for both of them.

Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

I need to mow 1 more time for Pickles. She does not like wet grass and when it is high she hates it even worse. Weather man predicts next Tuesday Sunny and a high of 60 so maybe then.
I did get the "white rain" blower out and ready though. ๐Ÿ˜ž

We ended up leaving Flagler Beach a day early and we just arrived at Lazy Days in Tampa. The weather was awful. It was like a small tropical storm yesterday. The wind was blowing a steady 20-25mph with gust way over 30. The wind was coming from the East right off the Atlantic. The motorhome got soaked with saltwater. I took it to a carwash that had an RV lane and was able to use the pressure washer and get the worst off. I have scheduled a detail of the motorhome at Lazy Days tomorrow morning at 9:30am. I can already see some rusty spots starting underneath so I just I will be spending some time on my back underneath the motorhome next weekend with some rustoleum paint! I know the northern folks have to deal with this during the winters. I used to work at a carwash when I was in high school and when the snowbirds would come for the winter, the first thing they did was stop at the car wash to get the salt off their cars. Sometimes the cars would look white from so much salt.

We are only about a 40 minute drive from home so we are going to stay an extra day and go home on Sunday morning. Then, back to work on Monday...:M

So sorry you all are having bad/cold weather. I'm in Quartzsite, AZ enjoying 80's in the day and low 60's at night. Heading to Apache Junction, AZ to have the decals removed and replaced on our motorhome. Weather there looking the same as here through the end of next week when they will be done. Then we head home (Saint George, UT) and get the home ready for all the kids and grandkids for a nice WARM Thanksgiving. Sending warmer weather out to you all.

Good morning everyone. It's raining this morning and the temperature is 46*. The high today will be 48 with rain so it will be a good day to sit in front of the fire and just relax. Suzie and Dixie wouldn't leave the porch this morning so they will have to be made to go out to take care of business.

All is well here at Camp Dixie, and I hope all is well with everyone also. Burch when Sue and I went to Destin, Florida we stayed on the beach and enjoyed it very much. There was a dog park close to the campground and the fur babies had a good time.

Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.
