A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Went camping this weekend at a campground on the lake, had not been there for a few years. Once there I began to walk around looking at the different sites when I noticed a very old dog. He just lay there until I got too close then he got up on three legs and hobbled away. Just judging I would say he is at least 11 years old. Well back to my story. The next afternoon he wanders into camp and just sits there looking. He looked so sad, so the wife got a bowl of our dog's food and put it down for him and he came over and ate. He then walked over to our dog and the two of them sniffed each other over and then they lay down together for the rest of the afternoon. That night he disappeared.
The next morning he was back and was a little more receptive of me. I looked at his injured leg and found that half of his rear foot was gone. It had healed and was not causing any problem except that he was walking on the stub that was left with no foot pad which causes him to limp. His front teeth were gone except for one canine tooth and it looked decayed. His eyes were tired looking and showing his age. He spent the rest of the day just laying around looking for a handout and by afternoon the campground host came around and saw him. I enquired about the dog and was told he had been there for three years and that most of the campers were tolerant of him and gave him food.
So what to do? Do you pick him up and bring him home or do you let nature take it course. He can't harm anyone, he has no teeth and he isn't a nuisance unless you don't like dogs, and no one seems to mind him being there. He is gentle and likes other animals as seen by his interaction with our dog. He still would not let me touch him but he would eat from my hand. Enough said, what would you do???

On June 28th 2008 Old Fella passed away of complications caused by bone cancer. Fella spent almost three years with his new family and became the icon of rescued old stray dogs. He will be greatly missed but his foot prints have been left in our hearts forever.

Now Charlie, the ten year old rescued Golden Lab has come to be a part of the continuing Old Fella story. (*Note, Charlie took his journey to Rainbow Bridge unexpectedly September 30, 2008)Suzie continues to charm her way into our hearts with her antics as she has grown from a puppy into a young lady. Togther they will carry on the Old Fella legacy. Come join us in their daily lives and be a part of the best feel good thread in RV.NET history. The legacy lives on.

Hi everyone. IT has been a good day. I was able to purchase some fire wood, haul it to the house and stack in it the back yard. My legs are getting weak and my steps are unsure. But I am managing to do whatever I feel is necessary. I miss the camper and truck, but I will learn to deal with it. We have an open campsite behind the house that has water electricity and sewer. you are welcome to some stay as long as you want free and enjoy the mountains and the beautiful day trips into the Great Smoky Mountains. Cherokee isn't that far away and it is an easy route to get there from here Four lane highway all the way. Asheville is only 90 miles away . come see the Biltmore house. Okay I will close for now wishing you a blessed evening, Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them. And yes we are pet friendly. So brings your pets with you and there is plenty of places to walk your pets and enjoy the scenery. Come and help us celebrate Christmas.

Hi everyone. My son got married this past weekend, I was not able to do the ceremony for him, but I found some one just as good if not better. He and Stephanie had dated 37 years before getting married. I hope all is well with everyone. I am doing pretty good, not 100 percent but I am getting around and doing for my self. my left side isn't doing well but manageable. I am weak on that side and I walk with a shuffle, not sure footed, but I ma getting by. Okay I am going to leave for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

@Dixie Flyer, I have come in here off and on through the years and remember seeing this years ago. This is always one place that I stop by to see if itโ€™s still going strong and love to see posts from you. Sounds like youโ€™re having issues with sight and such. So sorry youโ€™re not feeling good. My prayers to you.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think that wearing a basic, life saving device such as a mask would cause such controversy in our country.๐Ÿ˜ž
Heck you have people getting killed because they have a different political view. Doesn't surprise me at all about the mask. Same with the vaccine that several people said they would not take. We have some serious devision in the country.

WEAR A MASK!!!

Only if everyone would. I do think more people are starting to wear them in our area. Although you still see some that refuse or have it on wrong. We see a few that have them on to enter a building and then pull it down.

The Governor is going to start policing businesses with the W.C. First offense will be a warning second will be a closure up to 24 hours. Never said what it would be after that.

Soon the vaccine will be out. Hopefully enough people will take it to make a difference. We will soon as it is available.

Stay safe and Healthy

Decided to drop in for a visit. Reading DR. DOUg's post about the virus, interesting. I hope it is over soon. I keep going back and forth to the hospital and the last thing I need right now is to get the virus. I passed out at home the other morning. Still don't know what is going on. I had to back out of my son's wedding for fear of having a passing ou0 episode while conducting the service. Enough of that. I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

We'll miss you, Richard, and all your lovely posts about Suzie, Dixie, etc., but we will try to keep the Old Fella thread moving along.

We're in a lovely weather phase, with a cold front inbound for Sunday that will drop us into actual autumn temperatures. We might even have to build a fire or two, but it still won't be cold enough to have to turn on the heater.

I watched that interview about the vaccine.

Yes it will take a good while before everyone that wants to get vaccinated can get it.

It will stop when we have a vaccine, but that's a year away.

It will slow down to a "reasonable" risk when enough people are infected and recover and enough people stay at home that the surge to our health care system subsides. It could become more manageable if we find a treatment. It will be more manageable when we actually test enough people that we can isolate and contact trace those infected.

We have to get to a point that our health care system can manage the number of people infected.

Listen to the health care professionals NOT politicians.

This was a post I made at the end of March. There are some who are saying the pandemic will be over since the election is over.

PLEASE DON'T BUY INTO THIS NARRATIVE. We are in worse shape going into winter than we were at the peak early in April and May.

We are all getting pandemic fatigue, but all the evidence points to a more serious problem over the next few months. Cases and positivity rates and hospitalizations are all going up at an exponential rate.

On the positive side, there was a 60 Minutes story last night interviewing the military supply general in charge of distributing a vaccine when it is approved by the FDA. The US military is amazingly prepared for distribution of a vaccine working with private companies that are developing and manufacturing the vaccine and then the health care facilities and health departments that will administer the vaccine.

It will probably be the middle of next year before most of the country can be vaccinated even with the most optimistic outlook.

Keep yourselves safe, this will be over but it's going to take a little longer.

Well, it didn't work out with the dog. She is 12 or 13 and her owner was a man. On our walks, she would run to any man she saw thinking that he was her owner. That was sad. She peed in the house multiple times. Panted non stop and kept me up all night. She is being kept by the owner's son and his 11 year old daughter loves Molly, so she will be back in a safe place. Most of all, I didn't realize that I "wasn't ready" for a dog just yet. As if there is such a thing.
