A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Went camping this weekend at a campground on the lake, had not been there for a few years. Once there I began to walk around looking at the different sites when I noticed a very old dog. He just lay there until I got too close then he got up on three legs and hobbled away. Just judging I would say he is at least 11 years old. Well back to my story. The next afternoon he wanders into camp and just sits there looking. He looked so sad, so the wife got a bowl of our dog's food and put it down for him and he came over and ate. He then walked over to our dog and the two of them sniffed each other over and then they lay down together for the rest of the afternoon. That night he disappeared.
The next morning he was back and was a little more receptive of me. I looked at his injured leg and found that half of his rear foot was gone. It had healed and was not causing any problem except that he was walking on the stub that was left with no foot pad which causes him to limp. His front teeth were gone except for one canine tooth and it looked decayed. His eyes were tired looking and showing his age. He spent the rest of the day just laying around looking for a handout and by afternoon the campground host came around and saw him. I enquired about the dog and was told he had been there for three years and that most of the campers were tolerant of him and gave him food.
So what to do? Do you pick him up and bring him home or do you let nature take it course. He can't harm anyone, he has no teeth and he isn't a nuisance unless you don't like dogs, and no one seems to mind him being there. He is gentle and likes other animals as seen by his interaction with our dog. He still would not let me touch him but he would eat from my hand. Enough said, what would you do???

On June 28th 2008 Old Fella passed away of complications caused by bone cancer. Fella spent almost three years with his new family and became the icon of rescued old stray dogs. He will be greatly missed but his foot prints have been left in our hearts forever.

Now Charlie, the ten year old rescued Golden Lab has come to be a part of the continuing Old Fella story. (*Note, Charlie took his journey to Rainbow Bridge unexpectedly September 30, 2008)Suzie continues to charm her way into our hearts with her antics as she has grown from a puppy into a young lady. Togther they will carry on the Old Fella legacy. Come join us in their daily lives and be a part of the best feel good thread in RV.NET history. The legacy lives on.

We're back home and had a good visit. Old Fella and Levi enjoyed themselves very much. Izzie was glad to see us and met us at the door just talking. He really is a nice kitty, soory he had his problems a while back but he is fine now. I have a rescue early in the morning. Received a phone call while we were gone and a lady left a message on the answering machine. She has an injured hunting dog at her home that needs attention so I will go out and see what is going on.

Its been quiet on the thread since Saturday, guess folks are busy doing other things. Okay, I'm going to eat something so I will go for now. Talk with you later.

It's Sunday morning and all is well. Old Fella has had a great time as well as the rest of us. The girls {Ava and Allison} are still trying to get us to move to Greenville but I am not going to move and take on house payments at my age, it too risky. Besides I can't leave the work started in Waynesboro for animal rescue.

Old Fella is really having a good time with his fur cousins Abby and Miles. They get along great and have the most fun together. Levi is always in the mix when something is going on, he can't be left out of any games they play. We will go to church this morning and leave for home sometime after lunch. Ava and Travis have gone to Atlanta to the Falcon's football game so we have the place to our selves. Allison and her family live about three or four miles down the road so we will stop at their place on the way to chuch and pick them up and spend the rest of the day with them.

The leaves are still hanging in the trees and are so beautiful with their fall colors. We are at the foot hills of the mountains here in Greenville, what a pretty place. I have to run for now and I will talk with you later. Have a great day.

HI Richard,
Glad your having fun. Pattie and I were going to go down to Oceanside this weekend to visit the outlaws. But because of work Amy and I needed to get some work done in the shop today because we have a deadline to meet. Was not a bad day. Just me and my daughter so that worked out well. I think I have hit the goldmine, I get to work with my daughters (Amy & Alison) everyday. So I do feel lucky. Take care,

Carl

Today has been a very nice day. We are celebrating Austin's, one of my grandchildren 11th birthday. The weather is very warm here today, not like November weather at all. I watched the Georgia Bull Dogs win their football game and have been watching South Carolina at Florida. It feels good to have some time to relax and enjoy family.

Old Fella is enjoying himself with his friends Abby and Miles and of course Levi is here also. The girls have gone shopping while I watch the ball game and Austin. Every once in a while I have caught myself dropping off to sleep. I did get a phone call from a lady concerned about a hunting dog that showed up at her home with an injured leg. I asked her to keep it until Monday and then I would come see about it.

I hope all is well with everyone this weekend and that your fur babies are safe and sound. I am going back to watch the ball game now so have a nice evening and I will talk with you later.

Chemmie, If you check with the folks in Eaton about this dog, I would be willing to try to help make the transition to Eaton. It is down around Dayton and about 2+ hours from here. I am about the same distance to you. Dan (See you at the Christmas party if not before)

We are here in Greenville with Ava and her family. We had a nice
trip coming up and arrive safely. It is nice to get away for a few days and just get renewed. The last few days have been so exciting but also filled with a lot of pressure. Being here with family is relaxing and fun.

Old Fella is doing well and enjoying himself. This is the first time he has been inside Ava's home. When he came with us Christmas we came with the camper and stayed in their driveway, so Fella slept with us in the camper. Anyway we are all enjoying each other and just having fun.

Sunday when I get home I will have to start making some plans about the meeting with the Commissioners to make sure I have all the bases covered. Thursday night was so exciting and jam packed with pressure but what a great time it was. Thanks for your support and well wishes you are a great family. Talk with you later.

Why dont you call them and see if they know of a rescue center in that area. I have a gal here in Los Angeles that works with those dogs but I can't get a hold of her. I do have a message into her and as soon as I find out I will let you know.

Anyone on here know of an Australian Cattle Dog rescue group that deals with Northeast Ohio?? My girlfriend found a dog running around the parking lot of a grocery store almost two weeks ago. Being the softie she is she gathered him up and took him home. Mind you, the same evening she brought him home she was having a halloween party for 11 girls, all about 9 years old. She also has 2 dogs of her own. She has done everything that a person normally does to try and find his owners but no one has contacted her. She cannot keep him just because she already has 2 fairly large dogs and a small house. He is house trained, knows sit, stay, lay down and also gives a paw. He would not get on the couch (which is changing since he sees her dogs doing it) so obviously he has been trained and was cared for. He also gets along great with her 2 dogs and had a blast with all of the girls. The only no kill in the area is full. From his size, looks and "smartness" I would say he has cattle dog/blue healer in him. She has also stated that she has no problems fostering him until he can find a forever home. Also, is there anyone here who has access to put a dog on Petfinder? He is a sweet dog. I told her I would reach out and do what I can.
