A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Went camping this weekend at a campground on the lake, had not been there for a few years. Once there I began to walk around looking at the different sites when I noticed a very old dog. He just lay there until I got too close then he got up on three legs and hobbled away. Just judging I would say he is at least 11 years old. Well back to my story. The next afternoon he wanders into camp and just sits there looking. He looked so sad, so the wife got a bowl of our dog's food and put it down for him and he came over and ate. He then walked over to our dog and the two of them sniffed each other over and then they lay down together for the rest of the afternoon. That night he disappeared.
The next morning he was back and was a little more receptive of me. I looked at his injured leg and found that half of his rear foot was gone. It had healed and was not causing any problem except that he was walking on the stub that was left with no foot pad which causes him to limp. His front teeth were gone except for one canine tooth and it looked decayed. His eyes were tired looking and showing his age. He spent the rest of the day just laying around looking for a handout and by afternoon the campground host came around and saw him. I enquired about the dog and was told he had been there for three years and that most of the campers were tolerant of him and gave him food.
So what to do? Do you pick him up and bring him home or do you let nature take it course. He can't harm anyone, he has no teeth and he isn't a nuisance unless you don't like dogs, and no one seems to mind him being there. He is gentle and likes other animals as seen by his interaction with our dog. He still would not let me touch him but he would eat from my hand. Enough said, what would you do???

On June 28th 2008 Old Fella passed away of complications caused by bone cancer. Fella spent almost three years with his new family and became the icon of rescued old stray dogs. He will be greatly missed but his foot prints have been left in our hearts forever.

Now Charlie, the ten year old rescued Golden Lab has come to be a part of the continuing Old Fella story. (*Note, Charlie took his journey to Rainbow Bridge unexpectedly September 30, 2008)Suzie continues to charm her way into our hearts with her antics as she has grown from a puppy into a young lady. Togther they will carry on the Old Fella legacy. Come join us in their daily lives and be a part of the best feel good thread in RV.NET history. The legacy lives on.

HI All,
I just made it home from the hospital. Carl is stable and out of surgery. They move Carl from recovery into the CCU unit. The doctors had to go back in and fix the bleeding. Carlโ€™s doctor said that he was in the operation for about 7 hours. They got it fix but Carl lost a lot of blood. He has all ready taking 10 units.

I want to take this time to thank you all very much for all your love and prayers. Carl and I have all ways said that the best people in the world are camperโ€™s and animal lovers and you guyโ€™s proved it, You are the best. I will never ever forget your love.

May the love of GOD be with all of you always, With all my love back to you,

Pattie

Well at least we know what the problem is with OF's legs. Maybe some rest from long days in the truck will get him up and moving and feeling better. Here's hoping so at least.

Poor Fella. Did the dr say anything about a cart to help support his back end for walks? I hope he gets to feeling better when he gets a chance to stretch and get moving again. I know I get pretty stiff if I'm in the car all day and I don't have any arthritis!

Don took Sue, Old Fella and myself to Denver to VRCC Clinid where Dr Marion Neely works. He is an Orthopedic specialist ans surgeron. After a careful examination he came up with Old Fella has a bad case of arthritis and the joint is wearing away. Nothing much you can do about that except help him as much as you can and keep the joint bandaged when walking. He told us to keep up the Metacam and he gave us a sling to help him up and down steps.

We are all about to have our first gathering and will hold the memorial service for Bill Johnson. Talk with oyu later.

Old Fella has an appointment with an orthopedic Specialist in Denver at 1PM this afternoon. Maybe we can get some help that we haven't been able to get before.

Pattie I hope and pray that Carl is doing better. Don't worry about Old Fella and anything to do with TV. There will be enough time later after Carl's recovery.

The sun is shinning and it is beautiful outside this morning as I look out at the mountains. Colorado is simply beautiful. The rally is going well and the rest of the folks will be here today so we are looking froward to a great time this evening.

Patti - I'm so sorry Carl is going through this. I had hoped it was a quick surgery with an uneventful recovery. I hope his night was better and things stopped bleeding on their own. Prayers that things are better today.

Richard, glad Old Fella is able to "take care of business" so to speak. Maybe just the long ride, and rainy weather. I had a migraine for a couple of days while we waited for the front to move through. Give him an extra hug from we FOOFs....

Hi All,
It has been a bad day for Carl. He was put into intensive care today and was having some internal bleeding. The doctors may have to go back in tomorrow if the bleeding has not stopped. I am taking a few day of a work to be with Carl. Thank you all for the well wishes. I will print them out and take them to the hospital tomorrow.
