A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Went camping this weekend at a campground on the lake, had not been there for a few years. Once there I began to walk around looking at the different sites when I noticed a very old dog. He just lay there until I got too close then he got up on three legs and hobbled away. Just judging I would say he is at least 11 years old. Well back to my story. The next afternoon he wanders into camp and just sits there looking. He looked so sad, so the wife got a bowl of our dog's food and put it down for him and he came over and ate. He then walked over to our dog and the two of them sniffed each other over and then they lay down together for the rest of the afternoon. That night he disappeared.
The next morning he was back and was a little more receptive of me. I looked at his injured leg and found that half of his rear foot was gone. It had healed and was not causing any problem except that he was walking on the stub that was left with no foot pad which causes him to limp. His front teeth were gone except for one canine tooth and it looked decayed. His eyes were tired looking and showing his age. He spent the rest of the day just laying around looking for a handout and by afternoon the campground host came around and saw him. I enquired about the dog and was told he had been there for three years and that most of the campers were tolerant of him and gave him food.
So what to do? Do you pick him up and bring him home or do you let nature take it course. He can't harm anyone, he has no teeth and he isn't a nuisance unless you don't like dogs, and no one seems to mind him being there. He is gentle and likes other animals as seen by his interaction with our dog. He still would not let me touch him but he would eat from my hand. Enough said, what would you do???

On June 28th 2008 Old Fella passed away of complications caused by bone cancer. Fella spent almost three years with his new family and became the icon of rescued old stray dogs. He will be greatly missed but his foot prints have been left in our hearts forever.

Now Charlie, the ten year old rescued Golden Lab has come to be a part of the continuing Old Fella story. (*Note, Charlie took his journey to Rainbow Bridge unexpectedly September 30, 2008)Suzie continues to charm her way into our hearts with her antics as she has grown from a puppy into a young lady. Togther they will carry on the Old Fella legacy. Come join us in their daily lives and be a part of the best feel good thread in RV.NET history. The legacy lives on.

Thanks for the welcome. We're new to RVing and 8 months ago we bought a used TT and have had a great time so far with family and friends. I've participated on this forum several times and got some great input from the veterans of the hobby, but never really spent any time on the pet section, even though we are big pet lovers. I can't imagine going through life without our 4 legged companions. Like all the other 3/4 of a million viewers of this thread, this story of compassion and love really captured me. I intend to read more of the story and follow what happens next.
Maybe latter I'll share some of my pet stories...some good, some sad...but none quite like the tale of Old Fella.

Been sitting here over an hour and haven't read nearly half yet.
No doubt....Richard and Sue are very special people and Old Fella was lucky to have found them.

I forgot I had a neighbor close by on the thread. Greer is just up the road. Maybe we should get together some time?

Richard - you and I emailed back and forth several years ago - I knew your daughter Ava when she did an equity loan for me years ago. Small world.

10 degrees here in Nashville area! 2 inches of snow and no sign of melting soon. This is suppose to be a southern state! Willow could care less, but BenBen gets cold - needs a coat and booties.

Good morning everyone. It is 21* here this morning and the high will be in the mid to lower 30's according to the local weatherman with a low of 17* tonight. I am supposed to take the camper into Camping World today to have a shade replaced, but I am going to back out of the appointment because of the cold. I don't feel like loading up the camper in 20 something degree weather.

Izzie wanted to go outside this morning with the girls, so Sue let him out thinking he wouldn't stay long in the bitter cold. After thirty minutes I went out and got him. He was happy about coming inside and attacked the Christmas tree to show his displeasure. Gary, it's not supposed to be warmer in Colorado in December than it is in South Carolina. I am going to have a long and hard talk with Mother Nature about this. Tonight and Tuesday night we are expecting lows in the mid to lower teens. Yesterday I was told by locals this is unusual cold weather we are having here. The Jet Stream is dropping lower into the Deep South allowing the cold air in from Canada.

I hope we have some warm weather soon so we can enjoy being outside. Okay I need to get moving. The fur gang will have to wait until it warms up before we go for our walk. Merry Christmas everyone.

So sorry for your cool weather. We were at 81 today and last night I had to open a window and turn on a fan to cool down. Sure a big difference from the cool wet weather last Winter. Gotta love the Snowbird life. We're looking at a low of 54 tonight. Pack up and come on out to AZ.

The high is expected to be "near 60" here in Evergreen tomorrow. I almost feel guilty, but I know we'll pay for it eventually. Enjoying it while I can.
