A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Went camping this weekend at a campground on the lake, had not been there for a few years. Once there I began to walk around looking at the different sites when I noticed a very old dog. He just lay there until I got too close then he got up on three legs and hobbled away. Just judging I would say he is at least 11 years old. Well back to my story. The next afternoon he wanders into camp and just sits there looking. He looked so sad, so the wife got a bowl of our dog's food and put it down for him and he came over and ate. He then walked over to our dog and the two of them sniffed each other over and then they lay down together for the rest of the afternoon. That night he disappeared.
The next morning he was back and was a little more receptive of me. I looked at his injured leg and found that half of his rear foot was gone. It had healed and was not causing any problem except that he was walking on the stub that was left with no foot pad which causes him to limp. His front teeth were gone except for one canine tooth and it looked decayed. His eyes were tired looking and showing his age. He spent the rest of the day just laying around looking for a handout and by afternoon the campground host came around and saw him. I enquired about the dog and was told he had been there for three years and that most of the campers were tolerant of him and gave him food.
So what to do? Do you pick him up and bring him home or do you let nature take it course. He can't harm anyone, he has no teeth and he isn't a nuisance unless you don't like dogs, and no one seems to mind him being there. He is gentle and likes other animals as seen by his interaction with our dog. He still would not let me touch him but he would eat from my hand. Enough said, what would you do???

On June 28th 2008 Old Fella passed away of complications caused by bone cancer. Fella spent almost three years with his new family and became the icon of rescued old stray dogs. He will be greatly missed but his foot prints have been left in our hearts forever.

Now Charlie, the ten year old rescued Golden Lab has come to be a part of the continuing Old Fella story. (*Note, Charlie took his journey to Rainbow Bridge unexpectedly September 30, 2008)Suzie continues to charm her way into our hearts with her antics as she has grown from a puppy into a young lady. Togther they will carry on the Old Fella legacy. Come join us in their daily lives and be a part of the best feel good thread in RV.NET history. The legacy lives on.

So far today the temperature has reached 34 degrees. It has rained all day so the fur gang didn't go for their walk. Sue got excited to see a flock of Robins in the front yard this morning, hopefully a sure sign that spring is just around the corner. There is so much water in the yard it looks like we have had a flood. The camper sits in solitude waiting for a camping trip while I sit and look out the window thinking winter has got to give way to spring at some point.

Oh well, sigh, maybe next week Mother Nature will bring the warm breezes from the coast inland and with it sunny skies and nice warm days.

Great pictures Dan. It is cold here this morning as the temp is hanging around the 30 degree mark. We just got back from our walk and the wind is blowing a little so that makes it feel colder. The camper is still sitting in the back yard waiting for better and warmer days. I feel trapped inside the house and getting cabin fever really bad. I am going to get out today just to go somewhere, spend money and burn diesel. I will ask one of the girls out for lunch maybe.

We were very fortunate that they predicted it to bwe worse than it was. We had around 5-6" of snow then had freezing rain and sleet for about 4 hours. Generator never had to kick on. (whole house) It was sort of strange as the next morning the trees were not iced up but the snow on the ground was hard enough that you could walk on the top of it without sinking in.

Anna loves the outdoors and wants to go out all the time. We will put her coat on her and she will go out and play and look around for hours. Sarah likes the snow also but doesn't want to stay out as long as Anna. It is so amazing how Sarah gets around. YOu would never know that she has a dislocated hip.

Good morning everyone. We are doing well and inside where it is warm. The fur babies are all snuggled in for the morning waiting for me to say "Let's go." I will be glad when Spring gets here and we can put away the winter coats.

Great! I wonder how Dan and Lori are doing in Ohio? Anna has enough fur to keep them all warm.

I wish all of you that have been hit by the snow, ice and cold a warm night. We haven't been hit that hard with this last cold front. Today it was in the mid to upper 40's and tomorrow is supposed to be the same. When we had the last snow I had the generator waiting in the garage, but didn't need it. We have the camper back now, so if we get any ice or more snow we will have the camper as back up, as long as we don't need water as it is winterized right now and will be the rest of this month.

This winter has been a very cold one for everybody and I feel sorry for the homeless both human and animal. Okay, I'm going to bed, stay warm and I will talk with you tomorrow.

Yea! I am getting the generator fixed in the morning so I will be ready for the snow on Friday. As cold as it is for all of us.....I am darn grateful that I am not living in Australia and in the path of the cyclone. It is supposed to be bringing 180 mph winds and up to 3 FEET of rain! They have not recovered from the last flooding. My heart goes out to them. I saw a picture today of several horses standing in the flood waters already there and the water was half way up their sides. What will 3 more feet do? (If they survive the winds) What a disaster! Suddenly my troubles seem so minor!

We have been without power since 7:30 AM ๐Ÿ˜ž We have an electric heater, one lamp, and refridg. plugged into the generator. Hasn't been too bad all day; but now it's starting to get a little chilly. I sure hope the power comes back soon. Last estimate from the power company was midnight; but I heard there are over 5000 in our county without power so who knows. At least I've got 5 dogs and a husband to help keep me warm ๐Ÿ™‚ Nancy

We were supposed to get a lot of snow, but wound up with only an inch on the ground. It's been the cold that has hit us hard. It's been a while since I've had to wear my Sorels to work.

Thanks Gary, I deleted to many brackets, my dogs are loving this, Dudley jump in a pile and disappeared.

I remember Dot, my white greyhound who loved the snow. She could disappear right into the background. She had brindle spots called ticking that came and went with the seasons, just perfect camouflage. I think she was part weasel/ermine :B
