A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Went camping this weekend at a campground on the lake, had not been there for a few years. Once there I began to walk around looking at the different sites when I noticed a very old dog. He just lay there until I got too close then he got up on three legs and hobbled away. Just judging I would say he is at least 11 years old. Well back to my story. The next afternoon he wanders into camp and just sits there looking. He looked so sad, so the wife got a bowl of our dog's food and put it down for him and he came over and ate. He then walked over to our dog and the two of them sniffed each other over and then they lay down together for the rest of the afternoon. That night he disappeared.
The next morning he was back and was a little more receptive of me. I looked at his injured leg and found that half of his rear foot was gone. It had healed and was not causing any problem except that he was walking on the stub that was left with no foot pad which causes him to limp. His front teeth were gone except for one canine tooth and it looked decayed. His eyes were tired looking and showing his age. He spent the rest of the day just laying around looking for a handout and by afternoon the campground host came around and saw him. I enquired about the dog and was told he had been there for three years and that most of the campers were tolerant of him and gave him food.
So what to do? Do you pick him up and bring him home or do you let nature take it course. He can't harm anyone, he has no teeth and he isn't a nuisance unless you don't like dogs, and no one seems to mind him being there. He is gentle and likes other animals as seen by his interaction with our dog. He still would not let me touch him but he would eat from my hand. Enough said, what would you do???

On June 28th 2008 Old Fella passed away of complications caused by bone cancer. Fella spent almost three years with his new family and became the icon of rescued old stray dogs. He will be greatly missed but his foot prints have been left in our hearts forever.

Now Charlie, the ten year old rescued Golden Lab has come to be a part of the continuing Old Fella story. (*Note, Charlie took his journey to Rainbow Bridge unexpectedly September 30, 2008)Suzie continues to charm her way into our hearts with her antics as she has grown from a puppy into a young lady. Togther they will carry on the Old Fella legacy. Come join us in their daily lives and be a part of the best feel good thread in RV.NET history. The legacy lives on.

The clan is doing great. We are at Camp Dixie and everything is comfortable. We now have a phone, the internet service is up and running and yes I am going to get involved in the local effort to rescue animals. I have been in touch with some groups, just wondering which one to get hooked up with. The grandkids want to help so I will have some help getting started.

Unusually hot here (close to 90). Don't have air conditioning, so am foregoing the HDTV to stay downstairs in the cool family room with the ceiling fan running. I know Molly is a lot happier, with that thick coat. She is going to love the winters here!

Lily had to make an unscheduled vet visit yesterday due to an abrasion on her face between the eyes. I don't know how it happened, but greyhounds do tend to get hurt easily; she probably scraped herself on something in the yard. She has several staples in her face now (looks like she got into an argument with a crazed file clerk) and is on antibiotics, but is healing nicely. Molly had a scheduled vet visit today, and got a clean bill of health, along with a heartworm test, blood panel and urinalysis. The latter is because she is in sore need of a dental cleaning. After several days, I have finally managed to start brushing her teeth daily. Every time I would try to put either my finger or the brush into her mouth, she would suddenly come down with a severe case of lockjaw. She's a sweet dog, and is friendly with everyone, but she still doesn't like Dash.

Glad to see you back on line. I know that you missed the FOOF's.
Was fairly nice today but hot. In the low 90's but humidity was down. It is 84 now and feels sort of pleasant. Hope everyone has a safe and happy weekend.

Today was the first time the dogs were home alone for 11 hours, and everything was fine. It appears that Dash and Lily have taught Molly well about how to clean up after a Party. :B I had a big greeting waiting for me, and a kiss. Tonight, I even got a play bow!

Hi everyone. This is the first chance I have had to get to the internet. Gary, looks like you family is doing great, like the pictures. Izzy did great once he got to the new house. He settled right in without a problem.

I had to come over to Ava's house to get connected with the computer and will have to do that for a while. We are doing great and enjoying the new home. All the fur babies are joining us each night in the bedroom trying to find a place in the bed, ours not theirs! The move went very well without a hitch, but everything is still scattered about in boxes on the floor. Mama, Hobo, Peaches and Suzie seem to love the new home and yard. They have settled in and seem statisfied. Okay I have to run for now, talk with you later.

Gary, Glad things appear to be working our well. Like following the story of Molly and Lily and Dash.

Richard wanted me to advise that he does not have internet and probably won't for possibly a week. I talked to him today on the phone and he told me that the new home is quite roomy and very easy to get around in. Last night was the maiden voyage in the new home. After seeing the Waynesboro home I can't imagine how nice that Camp Dixie could be. I thought the Waynesboro home was quite nice. Camp dixie is just a little smaller than Richard's cousins home in Asheville.:B:B:B:B:B:B

This morning, Lily was sleeping downstairs in the family room. When I brought Dash and Molly downstairs to take them for their morning walk, Lily came out of the family room just as Molly was coming downstairs, and they touched noses in greeting. Just now, I came into the room to go to the computer, Lily came in first, I called her over for scritches, Molly came in and kissed Lily, then Dash came in and she growled. Things will get better between them, but at least Molly and Lily have become friends.

I left them alone for an extended period for the first time today, taking four hours to see a movie and do some shopping. When I got home, the home and all the dogs were intact, and Molly was really happy to see me. This was an important step, as they will be expected to be by themselves all day, and Molly needs to be assured that I will return.

Gary that sounds great! I'm glad to hear that things seem to be coming together for you all. A weekend of hiking is surely the best thing you could have done together. Sounds like you're making progress all around.

The camping trip to Golden Gate Canyon State Park was great, just returned home. I didnโ€™t have internet service, so I havenโ€™t been able to post until now. I did leave a night early so I wouldnโ€™t have any traffic at the dump station. A good thing, too, since the cleaning hose at the dump station was leaking badly.

Molly behaved wonderfully, although she did growl at Dash when they were in close quarters, and he growled at her in response. Nothing came of it, though, it was just a โ€œspaceโ€ thing, and I think sheโ€™s a bit afraid of him. Of course, I admonished both dogs when the growling occurred, but I do believe it will stop once she has adjusted to her new home (there has been no growling at all since we returned home). For the most part, though, they got along fine, and they walked together really nicely, even sniffing together at the same places, and I am making progress with her leash pulling. They did send some kind of pinch collar, but I took one look at that thing, and said "no way". I find a much better approach is simply to stop if she pulls and have her come back to me. When she does this immediately, she gets praised and we continue. Training her to heel on leash is the next thing.

We went on a couple of hikes while at the State Park; she LOVES to hike, and the altitude didnโ€™t seem to bother her at all, although I did limit her first hikes to a few miles (and carried lots of water) to avoid any potential problems with assimilation. The dogs were all very well behaved during the hikes. Below are a couple of pictures I took during one of the hikes, at a place called Panorama Point. She seems to like the crate I keep in the motorhome, so she slept there, and I even fed her in the crate, so there were no food aggression issues. I also prevent issues by removing the food from any of the dogs who do not finish in a timely manner. It seems to work, as Mollyโ€™s eating habits have definitely improved.

I mentioned that she growled at Dash a few times. She also growled at Lily, but not since a minor accident during one of the hikes. We were coming down a fairly steep and rocky incline, with Dash and Molly in front, and Lily lagging behind me. Suddenly, I heard a scream of pain. When I turned around, Lily was crying out and holding her front leg up. I checked her out, and looked at her leg, there was no visible injury, and she was able to put weight on it after a few moments, but I stopped for a few minutes just as a precaution. She was fine after that; probably just a misstep. What impressed me, though, was when she started crying, Molly walked over and stood next to her. Overall, I am very pleased with her behavior during the trip.

Before the trip, she spent Wednesday at Doggie Day Care, and made friends with all the staff, and several new friends among the dogs there. The staff told me how nice she was, and she got โ€œ5 bonesโ€ (highest mark) on her report card. Sheโ€™s very sociable, and loves making friends with all the people she meets. She is also very affectionate, and climbed up on the RV bed this morning looking for a tummy rub. She is lying by my side right now as I type this. She is a good dog and I couldn't help falling in love with her. I have already introduced her to the staff at my vet and made an appointment next week for an exam and heartworm test, so I can put her on Heartgard with the others. I did find out from her medical record that she will be 7 on July 20, so I now have two July Birthday girls (Lily turned 8 today). I look forward to many years with this sweet girl.

Richard, a good idea to get Izzie adjusted to the new place would be to keep him in a small quiet room (maybe a bedroom)for several days to get used to the smells and new area, go in the room to comfort him and spend time with him, keep all his toys and bed in there and feed him in that room. After a couple days let him out (supervised only) for short periods extending the time he's out as the days go by. This should be an uneventful way of him getting used to the new house.

Cats can show their discontent by going to the bathroom in inappropriate areas, so hopefully you'll be able to avoid any problems like that.

Good luck!

Its funny how we all are so differant, unpacking and finding new places for everything was something that I enjoyed doing. New beginnings, I guess. ๐Ÿ™‚

Take Care Richard and Sue, this can be a very exhausting time. Congrats on your new home and your new beginning. ๐Ÿ™‚
