Back in the mid 90's, when I was the new employee and had two weeks, I did long drives from SE Missouri to the west. I would get off work and be on the road after about two hours of last minute camper packing. I would drive about 250+ miles and call it a night. I would get up at maybe 5:30 am and hit the road again doing 6-700 miles. Once I got to my first destination I would kick it way back. I saw those as early recon trips which was often very helpful. I would get to some place and think ehhh this sucks and move on. I might arrive at another place and spend an extra day or two there vowing to return for more. Last year in Yellowstone there was road construction as always due to limited season so expect those delays along with buffalo jams, moron driver jams and the speed limit. heed others advice and head in early to the park every morning. After a certain time late morning the lines get insane. The museum in Cody ehhhh if you are a firearms buff I would think you could spend days in there. My dad and I spent maybe an hour or two tops. Beartooth Highway is scenic but never had the urge to go back. Tetons, beautiful but I never stay more than a couple hours. If your kids like pools and water slides fed by thermal water, Thermopolis might be a plan B while in Cody. Wind or Jewel cave while in the Black Hills....see me name so I might be a bit more biased in this. I think your more recent trip itinerary is much better than that Chevy Chase National Lampoons Vacation itinerary you originally posted :) Have fun.
