This thread was started, to cover the subject of fuel availability , not prices, etc. For many travelers, at times, the availability of fuel, is of more importance than is the price per unit.

On another forum thread, the question was asked as to how far apart the fuel stops were on the Alaska Hwy. I said about 100 miles was the most I could remember. After making that comment I decided to check and see if that was still correct. We were up to Alaska, the last trip in 2011. Here is what I found, using mostly currently listed mile posts, for reference. Current mile post and historic milepost can be over 30 miles different, on the northern end of the Alaska Hwy. Current travelers, please advise of any changes needed by PM.

Do yourself a favor and get the PenFed Visa Cash Rewards card which gives 5% cash back every month on fuel, has no Canadian transaction fees, and can be swiped at all pumps and must be swiped at the pump to get cash back. This is now the only card we use for car/RV fuel. It does require that you open a $25 money market account or pay a $25 yearly fee. Guess which option I chose.

Do not fall for the Canadian 3 cents per liter discount at some station as you pay inside. Sure you'll save 12 cents/gallon while I save 25 cents/gallon with my PenFed card.

Also here is a link to my Alaska trip fuel thread which can be used to get an estimate of 2014 fuel costs.

Thanks for your fuel listing, do you have it with Excel, I would love to use it.

BTW We're known as "Credit Card Deadbeats" in the industry - we collect the rewards/cash back and pay the bill in full every month.

I proudly wear the label. :B

We traveled the Alaskan highway (8264 miles) in 2010 and all MAJOR cards are accepted, BUT many cannot be used at the pump. You have to take your card into the station operator and leave it with him while you go back out and fuel your rig. He can run your card indoors so you are able to pay for your fuel. I have a problem being in a foreign country, handing my card to a total stranger, and walking away. I tried to avoid those stops. Using cash is one way and fueling often so you can be selective. They do have a lot of trouble with drive offs and the nearest police station may be an hour away. Have fun..Arnie

As far as I know there has never been any forum member reports, of ever being asked about the amount of fuel on board of a non-commercial vehicle. It appears to be a non-issue and one I wouldn't raise with the Customs officials. Most likely the fuel in your RV tank, came from Canada in the first place, as they are the largest supplier of petroleum products to the US, followed by Mexico and then the Middle East region.

I never been asked for fuel for the past 40 years crossing the border. When I go to my mother home near the border, I go for fuel across the border in USA and I tell the officer "I am just going to fuel up" and on my way back "Just went for fuel".

ON top you are allowed to bring a fuel can of a few gallons and fill it up.

There are a lot of gas stations on the Hwy but some are often out of gas or the machines are down, ditto for the propane. We work camped up there for two summers and it was often a problem. So, get it while you can should be the motto when travelling up there.

I have a 100 gallon aux. fuel tank in the bed of my truck. So I can carry 135 gallons total. When I cross the border into Canada will I be charged any taxes on the fuel in the aux tank? I have heard that I might, but what about a MH which can carry a lot more in their dual tanks.

No. They care about you knowing where you are going in Canada, how long are you going to be there, and where are you spending the night. IF you don't have the right answers be prepared to go inside and answer a bunch of questions. They have ALL your records from the US as reference. Have your passports ready and don't volunteer information.

We just got back from Alaska the end of June gone 4 weeks from Iowa. Just fill up at every station on the Alaskan Highway, some are closed and the informational signs don't say Closed. Never go below a 1/2 tank and don't count on the next station being open or being cheaper. Just get out your credit card and smile. Its a vacation!!

You could ask at the border just to make sure they don't overlook anything and then report to us how much you paid. :S

I've never been asked about fuel. Don't know why Canada would be concerned as they know you'll soon be buying their expensive fuel. Also you're the first person that's suggested a fuel tax. Maybe a Canadian they buys fuel in the US for the purpose of avoiding Canada's tax?

My tank is 130 gal about half what a HDT might carry.

My old Dodge has the same fuel capacity, crossed into Canada at Roosvile and near Carcross "up from Sgagway" the pasgt couple of weeks and they never asked about the fuel . We were able to fill up in Grande Prarie , Alberta , and make it all the way to Tok, Alaska via Sgagway and Dawson City "1800 miles" without being raped by having to buy fuel along the Alkan highway.
