Alaska Marine Highway

Just read that due to state budget cuts the Marine Highway doesn't have enough money to repair all their boats. The immediate effect is reduced Winter sailings to small communities in the Panhandle.

In any case, if one takes the AMHS on the "Inside Passage", do not skimp on either your photography gear or your rain gear. The photo ops are incredible and not to be missed (even in the rain!)

You may be surprised at the cost, that trip sounds like 3-5k. You can enter up to a 30' in their website and get an estimate- we first compared pricing against a hotel/ meal itinerary, and then ultimately decided that would be a separate fly-in trip. Plan your trip around when the eagles will be in Haines, and don't forget a boat tour or two.

If AMHS can get regular service re-established to Prince Rupert, I'd highly recommend it. In 2012 we took about a month traveling from Prince Rupert to Haines. We and and another couple were each traveling in class C motorhomes and towing Jeeps. We scheduled individual legs between port towns during daylight hours, with a few days between ferry hops. We spent time exploring and taking excursions while in Ketchikan, Wrangell and St. Peterburg. When we got to Juneau we took the "fast ferry" over to Sitka for a few days and then back to Juneau. Then we left our rigs near Juneau and took our tow cars on the ferry to Gustavus to spend a few days at the Glacier Bay Lodge. After returning from Glacier Bay we took the final ferry hop to Haines.

You may want to check our 2009 blog when we made that same trip, spending over three weeks going from Prince Rupert to Haines. We left Prince Rupert on May 28 and arrived in Haines on June 19. Many things have changed I'm sure in the last 10 years but you can get a good idea of the trip. We left home in Florida on March 23 and returned home on October 1. All 87 stops of the trip are on that blog.
